Although chemomechanical root canal preparation substantially reduces the bacterial load, microorganisms may remain within the root canal system. Intracanal medicaments are therefore used between treatment sessions to improve microbial reduction.\n\nIn this randomized, parallel-group clinical trial, teeth diagnosed with acute apical abscess are allocated to receive either a calcium hydroxide intracanal medicament or a calcium silicate-based intracanal medicament. All teeth undergo standardized root canal treatment and irrigation procedures.\n\nMicrobiological samples are collected at three main treatment stages: before chemomechanical preparation, after chemomechanical preparation and irrigation, and after a 7- to 10-day intracanal medication period. Bacterial DNA is analyzed using SYBR Green Real-Time PCR. Universal 16S rRNA primers are used to quantify the total bacterial load. Selected bacterial species associated with endodontic infections are also evaluated.\n\nThe primary outcome is the change in total bacterial load between the post-instrumentation sample and the sample collected after intracanal medication. Secondary outcomes include changes in selected bacterial species and bacterial levels across the different sampling stages. The study aims to determine and compare the microbial effectiveness of the two intracanal medicaments in acute apical abscess cases.",[36,42],{"label":37,"type":38,"description":39,"interventionNames":40},"Calcium Hydroxide Group","ACTIVE_COMPARATOR","After standardized chemomechanical root canal preparation, a calcium hydroxide-based intracanal medicament is placed into the root canal to 1 mm short of the working length and remains in the canal for 7 to 10 days.",[41],"Other: Calcium Hydroxide Intracanal Medicament",{"label":43,"type":44,"description":45,"interventionNames":46},"Calcium Silicate-Based Medicament Group","EXPERIMENTAL","After standardized chemomechanical root canal preparation, a calcium silicate-based intracanal medicament is placed into the root canal to 1 mm short of the working length and remains in the canal for 7 to 10 days.",[47],"Other: Calcium Silicate-Based Intracanal Medicament",[49,53],{"type":6,"name":50,"description":51,"armGroupLabels":52,"otherNames":22},"Calcium Hydroxide Intracanal Medicament","Calcium hydroxide-based intracanal medicament placed into the prepared root canal to 1 mm short of the working length for 7 to 10 days.",[37],{"type":6,"name":54,"description":55,"armGroupLabels":56,"otherNames":22},"Calcium Silicate-Based Intracanal Medicament","Calcium silicate-based intracanal medicament placed into the prepared root canal to 1 mm short of the working length for 7 to 10 days.",[43],[58],{"facility":59,"status":60,"city":61,"state":61,"zip":62,"country":63,"countryCode":22,"cosmosGeoPoint":64,"geoPoint":69,"contacts":70},"Ataturk University Faculty of Dentistry","RECRUITING","Erzurum","25240","Turkey (Türkiye)",{"type":65,"coordinates":66},"Point",[67,68],41.27694,39.90861,{"lat":68,"lon":67},[71],{"name":72,"role":73,"phone":74,"phoneExt":22,"email":75},"Halit Aladağ, DDS, PhD","CONTACT","+905414675965","haladag@atauni.edu.tr",{"type":77,"investigatorFullName":78,"investigatorTitle":79,"investigatorAffiliation":5,"oldNameTitle":22,"oldOrganization":22},"PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR","Halit Aladağ","Assistant Professor, Department of Endodontics","100655829","antibacterial-effects-of-intracanal-medicaments-in-acute-apical-abscesses-100655829",false,"NCT07819240","Antibacterial Effects of Intracanal Medicaments in Acute Apical Abscesses","Comparative Evaluation of the Antibacterial Efficacy of Calcium Hydroxide and a Calcium Silicate-Based Intracanal Medicament in Teeth With Acute Apical Abscesses Using Real-Time PCR: A Randomized Clinical Trial","CAM-AAA","Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* Diagnosis of acute apical abscess\n* A single-rooted permanent tooth requiring primary endodontic treatment\n* Age between 18 and 65 years\n* No history of systemic disease\n* American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification I (ASA I)\n* Provision of written informed consent\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* Previous endodontic treatment of the affected tooth\n* Periodontal probing depth greater than 4 mm\n* History of trauma involving the affected tooth\n* Pregnancy or breastfeeding\n* Immunodeficiency","ALL","18 Years","65 Years",{"count":92,"type":93},56,"ESTIMATED","INTERVENTIONAL",[96],"NA","This randomized clinical trial compares the antibacterial effects of calcium hydroxide and a calcium silicate-based intracanal medicament in teeth with acute apical abscesses.
