Because the two conditions share many similar clinical manifestations, misdiagnosis is common. Epiploic appendagitis is a benign and self-limiting disease; however, when misdiagnosed as diverticulitis, it may lead to unnecessary hospitalization, antibiotic treatment, or even surgical intervention, resulting in increased healthcare utilization and patient burden. Although computed tomography (CT) is currently considered the gold standard for diagnosing both conditions, identifying distinguishing clinical features may facilitate accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.\n\nThis study will perform a retrospective analysis of adult patients who presented to the emergency department of National Taiwan University Hospital, Hsin-Chu and Yun-Lin Branches between January 2022 and December 2025 and were diagnosed with either right-sided epiploic appendagitis or right-sided colonic diverticulitis based on CT findings. Clinical presentations, laboratory data, ultrasound and CT imaging characteristics, treatment strategies, and clinical outcomes will be compared between the two groups. The study aims to identify imaging and clinical features that may facilitate the rapid differentiation of these two conditions in the emergency department.","patients more than 20 years with CT-confirmed right-sided epiploic appendagitis",[20,23],{"label":21,"type":13,"description":22,"interventionNames":13},"EA case","patients with right-sided epiploic appendagitis",{"label":24,"type":13,"description":25,"interventionNames":13},"diverticulitis control","patients with right-sided diverticulitis",[27],{"name":28,"affiliation":29,"role":30},"Wan-Ching Lien","Wan-Ching Lien, attending physician, National Taiwan University Hospital","PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR",[32],{"name":33,"role":34,"phone":35,"phoneExt":13,"email":36},"Wan-Ching Lien, Professor","CONTACT","+886-2-23123456","wanchinglien@ntu.edu.tw",{"type":38,"investigatorFullName":13,"investigatorTitle":13,"investigatorAffiliation":13,"oldNameTitle":13,"oldOrganization":13},"SPONSOR","100654158","differentiating-right-sided-epiploic-appendagitis-from-diverticulitis-100654158",false,"NCT07794865","Differentiating Right-sided Epiploic Appendagitis From Diverticulitis","Differentiating Right-sided Epiploic Appendagitis From Diverticulitis: A Retrospective Analysis of Clinical Presentation, Imaging Characteristics, and Outcomes","Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* patients more than 20 years, with CT-confirmed right-sided epiploic appendagitis\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* patients less than 20 years with other abdominal pathologies","ALL","20 Years",{"count":49,"type":50},50,"ESTIMATED","OBSERVATIONAL","This study will perform a retrospective analysis of adult patients who presented to the emergency department of National Taiwan University Hospital, Hsin-Chu and Yun-Lin Branches between January 2022 and December 2025 and were diagnosed with either right-sided epiploic appendagitis or right-sided colonic diverticulitis based on CT findings.
