Wide awake local anesthesia no tourniquet (WALANT) surgery on the hand is gaining popularity due to efficiency, cost savings and patient safety.\n\nDespite the popularity of WALANT, it still can be anxiety producing even for patients who choose to proceed with surgery without sedation. Music has been shown to decrease anxiety during surgery, but patients' music choices vary widely. The frequency (Hz) of the music intervention has been shown to impact pain reduction, and patient choice of music has been shown to increase sense of control which can decrease anxiety. No study has evaluated the intraoperative effect of patient choice of music vs standardized relaxation music on intraoperative anxiety.\n\nThe primary objective of this research is to compare the effect of patient music choice vs standardized relaxation music played during surgery on anxiety levels in patients undergoing WALANT hand surgery. The investigators hypothesize that standardized relaxation music will result in reduced anxiety compared to patient's choice of music.",[36,41],{"label":37,"type":38,"description":19,"interventionNames":39},"Standardized Relaxation Music","EXPERIMENTAL",[40],"Other: Standardized Relaxation Music",{"label":42,"type":43,"description":19,"interventionNames":44},"Personal Choice of Music","ACTIVE_COMPARATOR",[45],"Other: Personal Choice of Music",[47,50],{"type":6,"name":37,"description":48,"armGroupLabels":49,"otherNames":19},"Participants listen to standardized relaxation music during surgery.",[37],{"type":6,"name":42,"description":51,"armGroupLabels":52,"otherNames":19},"Participants listen to their preferred music during surgery.",[42],[54],{"name":55,"affiliation":5,"role":56},"Lisa Kruse, MD","PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR",[58],{"name":59,"role":60,"phone":61,"phoneExt":19,"email":62},"Katie Schjei","CONTACT","608-234-6719","Schjei@ortho.wisc.edu",[64],{"facility":65,"status":66,"city":67,"state":68,"zip":69,"country":70,"countryCode":71,"cosmosGeoPoint":72,"geoPoint":77,"contacts":19},"University of Wisconsin","RECRUITING","Madison","Wisconsin","53705","United States","US",{"type":73,"coordinates":74},"Point",[75,76],-89.40123,43.07305,{"lat":76,"lon":75},{"type":79,"investigatorFullName":19,"investigatorTitle":19,"investigatorAffiliation":19,"oldNameTitle":19,"oldOrganization":19},"SPONSOR","100475590","music-interventions-during-wide-awake-hand-surgery-100475590",false,"NCT05472909","Music Interventions During Wide-Awake Hand Surgery","Music Interventions During Wide-Awake Hand Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial","Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* Adult (18 years of age or older) patients\n* Undergoing Wide Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet (WALANT) hand surgery\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* Patients under the age of 18\n* Patients unable to consent for themselves\n* Patients unwilling to consent\n* Non-English speaking patients\n* Patients with significant hearing impairment not able to be corrected with assistive devices","ALL","18 Years",{"count":90,"type":91},170,"ESTIMATED","INTERVENTIONAL",[94],"NA","The purpose of this study is to examine if patients have a lower anxiety level during wide awake hand surgery while listening to their choice of music vs standardized relaxation music.
