Many positive changes have been made over the years, but there remains room for improvement. Lumbar spine surgery allows for easy access to the intrathecal space (the fluid around the spinal cord, or CSF) where medications can be given to directly work on pain receptors in the spinal cord. We know that two medications, morphine and clonidine, can be helpful for pain relief when given into the CSF. Our hypothesis is that adding clonidine and morphine together may offer better pain control than just morphine alone. We hope this study will give us more pain-control options for patients having spine surgery.",[33,39],{"label":34,"type":35,"description":36,"interventionNames":37},"Intrathecal Morphine","ACTIVE_COMPARATOR","Participants in this group will receive the current standard of care.",[38],"Drug: Intrathecal Morphine",{"label":40,"type":41,"description":42,"interventionNames":43},"Intrathecal Morphine + Intrathecal Clonidine","EXPERIMENTAL","Participants in this group will receive the experimental treatment; the standard of care with the addition of 75 mcg of intrathecal clonidine.",[44],"Drug: Intrathecal Morphine + Intrathecal Clonidine",[46,50],{"type":47,"name":40,"description":48,"armGroupLabels":49,"otherNames":19},"DRUG","Participants in the intervention group will receive the standard of care (150 mcg of intrathecal morphine) with the addition of 75 mcg of clonidine.",[40],{"type":47,"name":34,"description":51,"armGroupLabels":52,"otherNames":19},"Participants in this group will receive the standard of care; 150 mcg of intrathecal morphine",[34],[54],{"name":55,"affiliation":5,"role":56},"Parker Merrill, MD","PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR",[58,63],{"name":59,"role":60,"phone":61,"phoneExt":19,"email":62},"Janelle Research Coordinator","CONTACT","207-662-2862","janelle.richard@mainehealth.org",{"name":55,"role":60,"phone":64,"phoneExt":19,"email":65},"617-221-3028","Parker.merrill@spectrumhcp.com",[67],{"facility":68,"status":19,"city":69,"state":70,"zip":71,"country":72,"countryCode":73,"cosmosGeoPoint":74,"geoPoint":79,"contacts":80},"MaineHealth Maine Medical Center-Portland","Portland","Maine","04102","United States","US",{"type":75,"coordinates":76},"Point",[77,78],-70.2589,43.65737,{"lat":78,"lon":77},[81],{"name":59,"role":60,"phone":61,"phoneExt":19,"email":62},{"type":56,"investigatorFullName":83,"investigatorTitle":84,"investigatorAffiliation":5,"oldNameTitle":19,"oldOrganization":19},"Parker Merill","Neurosurgery Division Director, Department of Anesthesiology","100658171","phase-3-itm-vs-itmclonidine-for-lumbar-fusions-100658171",false,"NCT07846657","ITM vs ITM+Clonidine for Lumbar Fusions","Intrathecal Morphine vs Intrathecal Morphine Combined With Clonidine for 1-2 Level Lumbar Fusion","Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* 18-70 years of age\n* Scheduled for 1-2 level lumbar fusion\n* Expected post-operative inpatient stay of at least 24 hours\n* ASA I-III\n* English speaking\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* Substance use disorder\n* Chronic pain (opioid use of 90 MME daily prior to surgery)\n* BMI \\> 40\n* Allergies to clonidine or morphine\n* Emergent surgery\n* Coagulopathy (INR \\>1.5)\n* Platelet count \\\u003C80\n* Significant cardiovascular disease\n* baseline systolic blood pressure \\\u003C100\n* Patients on clonidine prior to surgery\n* Patients scheduled for a revision surgical procedure\n* Patients who are unable to give informed consent\n* Pregnant patients\n* Prisoners","ALL","18 Years","70 Years",{"count":96,"type":97},70,"ESTIMATED","INTERVENTIONAL",[100],"PHASE3","Dr. Parker Merrill (anesthesiologist) and Dr. Chris Neal (neurosurgeon) are working on a research study comparing two methods of pain control for patients having spinal fusion surgery.\n\nWe are looking for English-speaking patients between 18 and 70 years old who are scheduled for 1-2 level lumbar spine fusion surgery.\n\nParticipants in this study will either get morphine injected during surgery (current pain treatment) or morphine and another drug, clonidine.
