DED is a multifactorial condition that can cause stinging, burning sensation or dry eyes. It can also have clinically significant findings such as decreased tear production (aqueous-deficient DED) or increased tear evaporation (evaporative DED). Conditions like this often lead to discomfort, and thus individuals to drop out of wearing contact lenses.
