Ureter injury is a rare but serious complication, and in some patients the ureter is hard to see under standard white light. Adults having open, laparoscopic, or robotic left-sided colorectal surgery at Prince of Wales Hospital (Hong Kong) will be screened; if the left ureter cannot be clearly seen before dissection, they will be randomly assigned to either fluorescence imaging with methylene blue or standard white-light vision alone.\n\nThe main outcome is the time from starting dissection to first seeing the left ureter. The study will also record how often the ureter is seen at set time points, operating times, surgeon-rated ease and confidence, any changes to the surgical plan, complications, and ureteric injuries. The goal is to find out whether the fluorescence method can make ureter identification faster and easier, potentially improving safety without needing invasive preoperative ureteric stents.",[22,28],{"label":23,"type":24,"description":23,"interventionNames":25},"Fluorescence Imaging with Intravenous Methylene Blue","EXPERIMENTAL",[26,27],"Drug: Intravenous Methylene blue","Device: Fluorescence Imaging Device for Methylene Blue",{"label":29,"type":30,"description":29,"interventionNames":13},"White Light Visualisation Alone","NO_INTERVENTION",[32,37],{"type":33,"name":34,"description":35,"armGroupLabels":36,"otherNames":13},"DRUG","Intravenous Methylene blue","Intravenous methylene blue 0.5-1.0 mg\u002Fkg administered intraoperatively for fluorescence ureter identification.",[23],{"type":38,"name":39,"description":40,"armGroupLabels":41,"otherNames":13},"DEVICE","Fluorescence Imaging Device for Methylene Blue","Modified Stryker 1688 Fluorescence Laparoscopic System with additional filter",[23],[43],{"name":44,"role":45,"phone":46,"phoneExt":13,"email":47},"Trevor Yeung, MA, MBBChir, DPhil, FRCS","CONTACT","+852 3505 1495","uretertrial@gmail.com",[49],{"facility":50,"status":13,"city":51,"state":13,"zip":13,"country":51,"countryCode":52,"cosmosGeoPoint":53,"geoPoint":58,"contacts":59},"Prince of Wales Hospital, The Chinese University of Hong Kong","Hong Kong","HK",{"type":54,"coordinates":55},"Point",[56,57],114.17469,22.27832,{"lat":57,"lon":56},[60],{"name":44,"role":45,"phone":46,"phoneExt":13,"email":47},{"type":62,"investigatorFullName":63,"investigatorTitle":64,"investigatorAffiliation":5,"oldNameTitle":13,"oldOrganization":13},"PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR","Trevor Yeung","Assistant Professor","100657294","phase-4-randomised-controlled-trial-of-fluorescent-urography-using-intravenous-methylene-blue-compared-to-white-light-alone-in-left-sided-colorectal-surgery-100657294",false,"NCT07835932","Randomised Controlled Trial of Fluorescent Urography Using Intravenous Methylene Blue Compared to White Light Alone in Left-sided Colorectal Surgery","Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* Aged ≥18 years\n* Scheduled to undergo open, laparoscopic or robotic left-sided colorectal surgery, including left colectomy, high anterior resection, low anterior resection, abdominoperineal resection, subtotal colectomy and total colectomy.\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* Unable to understand the aims and objectives of this study and unable to give consent for participation\n* Known allergy to methylene blue\n* Pregnant\n* Taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or tricyclic antidepressants (risk of serotonin syndrome)\n* Significant renal or hepatic impairment\n* Presence of renal or ureteric obstruction\n* History of G6PD deficiency (risk of hemolytic anemia)","ALL","18 Years",{"count":74,"type":75},108,"ESTIMATED","INTERVENTIONAL",[78],"PHASE4","This study will see if a blue dye (methylene blue) given into a vein, together with a special camera light, helps surgeons find the left ureter (the tube from the kidney to the bladder) faster during left-sided bowel surgery.
