PCOS was recently reclassified as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) to better describe the multi-systemic and endocrine nature of the disorder. Beyond reproductive concerns, PMOS patients are at significantly higher risk of developing diabetes. Similarly, PMOS patients are at a higher risk of presenting with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). While it is known that OSA contributes to metabolic dysfunction, this effect has been shown to be disproportionately larger in individuals with pre-existing metabolic dysfunction. With the wider recognition of PMOS as a metabolic disorder, and despite the known link between PMOS and OSA, there are no studies investigating the effects of OSA in a PMOS population. Metabolic dysfunction in skeletal muscle is part of the PMOS phenotype. The research team will use high resolution respirometry on skeletal muscle biopsies- a cutting-edge method for assessing changes in mitochondrial function and cellular metabolism. Muscle biopsies will be done with and without OSA treatment (Continuous Positive Air Pressure- CPAP) as an investigation into the effect of OSA on mitochondrial function.",[21,27],{"label":22,"type":23,"description":24,"interventionNames":25},"Treated","ACTIVE_COMPARATOR","Treated with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP).",[26],"Device: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)",{"label":28,"type":29,"description":13,"interventionNames":13},"Untreated","NO_INTERVENTION",[31],{"type":32,"name":33,"description":34,"armGroupLabels":35,"otherNames":13},"DEVICE","Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)","Two nights of CPAP treatment for OSA.",[22],[37],{"name":38,"role":39,"phone":40,"phoneExt":13,"email":41},"Bonnie Olivia Hughes","CONTACT","773-834-7809","bhughes8@bsd.uchicago.edu",[43],{"facility":5,"status":44,"city":45,"state":46,"zip":47,"country":48,"countryCode":49,"cosmosGeoPoint":50,"geoPoint":55,"contacts":56},"RECRUITING","Chicago","Illinois","60637","United States","US",{"type":51,"coordinates":52},"Point",[53,54],-87.65005,41.85003,{"lat":54,"lon":53},[57],{"name":38,"role":39,"phone":40,"phoneExt":13,"email":41},{"type":59,"investigatorFullName":13,"investigatorTitle":13,"investigatorAffiliation":13,"oldNameTitle":13,"oldOrganization":13},"SPONSOR","100659904","pmos-in-osa-pilot-study-100659904",false,"NCT07871149","PMOS in OSA Pilot Study","Metabolic Changes in PMOS Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Pilot Study","Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* Women 18-40 years old\n* PMOS diagnosis\n* Sleep Apnea (AHI\\>5) diagnosed by home sleep test (WatchPAT One)\n* BMI\\\u003C 50.0\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* Regular adherent CPAP use per clinical guidelines\n* Any history of bleeding disorders\n* Current use of anti-coagulant medication\n* Hemoglobin \\\u003C11.6 g\u002FdL\n* Currently pregnant, pregnant within the last year, or gave birth within the last year\n* Any underlying disease likely to limit life span and\u002For increase risk of interventions including cardiovascular disease (e.g. unstable angina, heart failure requiring hospitalization in the past 6 months, significant heart block or arrhythmias, NYHA Class\\>2), pulmonary disease with dependence on oxygen or daily use of bronchodilators, cancer requiring treatment in the past 5 years unless the prognosis is considered good, active or chronic infection, thyroid disease and other endocrine disorders (e.g. Cushing syndrome, acromegaly), hepatitis or other chronic gastrointestinal disease (pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease), renal disease, significant anemia, recent surgery or significant abdominal surgery, major psychiatric or any eating disorder, acute coronary syndrome or stroke in the past 6 months","FEMALE","18 Years","40 Years",{"count":71,"type":72},10,"ESTIMATED","INTERVENTIONAL",[75],"NA","The goal of this study is to obtain pilot data investigating the effects of sleep apnea on mitochondrial function and cellular metabolism in Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) patients.",[78,79,80,81],"PCOS","PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)","OSA","OSA - Obstructive Sleep Apnea",[78,80,83],"PMOS","2026-10-07",{"date":86,"type":87},"2026-10-13","ACTUAL",{"date":89,"type":72},"2026-10",{"date":91,"type":72},"2028-10",{"name":5,"class":6},1]
