A variety of tools and techniques can be used to do this. At The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) surgeons attempt to remove the stem using less invasive measures, such as osteotomes, a tool that separates the stem from the bone, but if it doesn't work, they may need to perform an extended trochanteric osteotomy (ETO). An ETO is more invasive and increases the risk of complications.\n\nThe Watson Extraction System (WES) is another Health Canada approved tool that goes around the stem to help remove the femoral stem from the thigh bone. Research shows that the WES has been studied in case series of a few people, and the results seem promising, reducing the time of extraction and need for ETO. However, it is not clear if it offers better results than what is currently done at TOH.\n\nThe purpose of this study is to compare the WES to the current\u002Fusual care care at TOH to determine whether the WES can remove the femoral stem more efficiently (in less time and at a lower hospital cost) and effectively, while improving patient safety.",[27],"Revision Arthroplasty","NOT_YET_RECRUITING","2026-09-24",{"date":31,"type":32},"2026-09-29","ACTUAL",{"date":34,"type":21},"2026-10-01",{"date":36,"type":21},"2027-07-01",{"name":38,"class":39},"Ottawa Hospital Research Institute","OTHER",1,{"id":42,"slug":43,"hasResults":11,"nctId":44,"briefTitle":45,"officialTitle":46,"acronym":4,"eligibilityCriteria":47,"healthyVolunteers":11,"sex":17,"minAge":18,"maxAge":4,"enrollmentInfo":48,"targetDuration":4,"studyType":50,"phases":4,"briefSummary":51,"conditions":52,"keywords":4,"overallStatus":28,"whyStopped":4,"lastUpdateSubmitDate":55,"lastUpdatePostDateStruct":56,"startDateStruct":58,"completionDateStruct":60,"leadSponsor":62,"locationsCount":65},"100657884","persona-revision-knee-system-emea-pmcf-study-100657884","NCT07843966","Persona Revision Knee System EMEA PMCF Study","Post-Market Clinical Follow-Up Study to Provide Long-term Safety, Performance and Clinical Benefits Data of the Persona® Revision Knee System (Implants and Instrumentation)","Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* Patient qualifies for a revision knee arthroplasty with the Persona Revision Knee System. The secondary purposes are to compare patient satisfaction, loosening rates and clinical outcomes for RHK implants compared to CCK implants in rTKA. Additionally, knee range of motion and stability will be assessed and compared at all follow-up time points. We hypothesize that RHK implants provide patients undergoing rTKA with similar reoperation rates to those of patients who receive a CCK implant. The investigators hypothesize that patients who receive an RHK implant will have similar loosening rates and clinical outcomes compared to patients who receive a CCK implant.
