About this trial
The purpose of this study is to investigate the suitability of intermittent exercise of long and short intervals at lower intensities than HIIE on energy expenditure during and post-exercise compared to MICE, as well as determine whether similar or greater effects can be achieved for glycemic control in recreationally active adults.
Eligibility criteria
This trial accepts healthy volunteersQualifiers
Healthy recreationally active men
BMI between 18.5-27 kg/m2
Aged between 20 to 45 years
Regular exercise (3 times per week and longer than 3 months) with cardio exercise longer than 30 minutes at least once a week
Disqualifiers
having any cardiovascular, metabolic or pulmonary disease (angina pectoris or uncontrolled arrhythmias)
suffering from infectious contagious diseases,
using medications that could affect metabolic responses (including anti-inflammatory medications)
smoking
Trial design
Crossover
Treatments tested in this trial
Moderate-intensity continuous running (MICE: 60% V̇O2max)
BehavioralParticipants run continuously for 40 minutes at moderate intensity (60-65% V̇O2max)
5-minute interval running (5MIN)
BehavioralParticipants run for 40 minutes at average moderate intensity with 5-minutes slow and fast cycles where speed is increased and decreased by 20%.
2-minute interval running (2MIN)
BehavioralParticipants run for 40 minutes at average moderate intensity with 2-minutes slow and fast cycles where speed is increased and decreased by 20%.
Treatment groups
Trial outcomes
Primary outcomes
Total energy expenditure
Changes in total energy expenditure during 40-minutes running and 30 minutes of EPOC
Substrate utilisation
Changes in substrate utilisation during 40-minutes running and 30 minutes of EPOC
Secondary outcomes
Muscle oxygen saturation
Changes in muscle oxygen during 40 minutes running and 30 minutes EPOC
Subjective appetite sensation
Changes in subjective feeling of appetite using 0-100 mm scale (e.g., hunger and satisfaction) during trials
