About this trial

A 60-second video will be created by a high-engaging adult female influencer via a partnership with an influencer agency, Dove/Unilever, and CAR to be delivered by the same influencer to her followers on Instagram and TikTok. The video will focus on sharing an evidence-informed exercise to support challenging appearance ideals and the development of body confidence among adult women.

The research will involve three distinct parts:

* Conduct an online two-arm randomised control trial (RCT) with between 1000 to 1600 women to evaluate acceptability and efficacy of an influencer-delivered intervention video (versus an active control video) * Explore the feasibility of recruiting participants via influencers on their social media platforms in the same two-arm RCT * Conduct an online survey with 10-20 Canadian influencers recruited via an influencer agency to assess influencer opinions on creating and delivering evidence-based body image and other mental health content on their social media platforms, as well as their views on recruiting their followers for research participation

Trial outcomes

Primary outcomes

1

Change in state body satisfaction

State body satisfaction will be measured by three items on a 101-point Visual Analogue Scales (VAS), ranging from "completely dissatisfied" (0) to "completely satisfied" (100). Items are: "How satisfied do you feel about your weight, right now?"; "How satisfied do you feel about your shape, right now?"; and "How satisfied do you feel about your appearance, right now?". Higher mean scores (of three items) indicates greater state body satisfaction.

Time frame
Time 1/T1 (baseline) and Time 2/T2 (immediately post-assessment)

Secondary outcomes

1

Change in state body functionality satisfaction

A 101-point Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) will assess participants' state body functionality satisfaction using a single item (i.e., "How satisfied are you with what your body can do right now?". Response options range from 'completely dissatisfied" (0) to "completely satisfied (100), with higher scores indicating greater state body functionality satisfaction.

Time frame
T1 (baseline) and T2 (immediately post-assessment)
2

Trait appearance esteem

Baseline trait appearance esteem will be collected to control for differences at baseline. It will be measured by the Appearance subscale of the Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults (BESAA) consisting of 6 items rated on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from "never" (1) to "always" (5). Six items are reversed scored and scores for each item are averaged with higher scores indicating higher appearance esteem.

Time frame
T1 (baseline)
3

Change in state body appreciation

A modified version of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 Short Form will be used to measure state body appreciation (i.e., "I feel love for my body, right now" and "I am comfortable in my body, right now"). To tap into state body appreciation, "right now" was added to each of the items, and instead of a Likert scale, a 101-point VAS will be used ranging from "strongly disagree" (0) to "strongly agree" (100). Higher mean scores indicate greater state body appreciation.

Time frame
T1 (baseline) and T2 (immediately post-assessment)
4

Intervention acceptability

All participants will answer the same four acceptability questions. The four questions relate to their enjoyment in watching the video; relatability of the video content; likeability of the influencer delivering the content; and likelihood of recommending the video to a friend. Response options are on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from "not at all" (1) to "very much (5).

Time frame
T2 (immediately post-assessment)

Other outcomes

1

Strength of parasocial relationship

A well-used 8-item measure of parasocial relationships between influencer and their followers, is measured on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from "totally disagree" (1) to "totally agree" (5). Example items include "I would like to meet the influencer in person" and "the influencer makes me feel comfortable, as if I am with friends". Higher scores indicate greater strength of the parasocial relationship.

Time frame
T2 (immediately post-assessment)
