About this trial

This study will examine how hybrid telerehabilitation is used in routine physiotherapy care for adults with anterior knee pain. Approximately 30 participants will be followed for 72 weeks while receiving individualized treatment from their physiotherapist, supported by the moveUP mobile application. The application provides prescribed exercises, educational information, communication with the physiotherapist, and progress monitoring.

The study will assess adherence to rehabilitation, pain, knee function, quality of life, psychological factors, and physical activity. It will also explore whether patient adherence and physiotherapist engagement are associated with clinical outcomes. Interviews with patients and healthcare professionals will examine barriers and facilitators to using the platform in routine care.

Treatments tested in this trial

  • Hybrid Telerehabilitation

    Behavioral

Hybrid telerehabilitation combining routine physiotherapy with the moveUP mobile application for adults with anterior knee pain. The platform supports individualized exercise prescription, educational modules, patient-physiotherapist communication, and progress monitoring. Exercise selection, frequency, and progression are determined by the treating physiotherapist according to patient needs. Participants are followed for 72 weeks.

Trial outcomes

Primary outcomes

1

Exercise Adherence (ATEMPT Score)

Exercise adherence will be assessed using the Adherence to Exercise for Musculoskeletal Pain Tool (ATEMPT). Total scores range from 6 to 30, with higher scores indicating greater adherence.

Time frame
Baseline and weeks 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72
2

Pain Intensity (Visual Analog Scale)

Pain intensity will be measured using a 0-100 mm Visual Analog Scale (VAS), where 0 indicates no pain and 100 indicates the worst pain imaginable. Higher scores indicate greater pain intensity.

Time frame
Baseline and weeks 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72

Secondary outcomes

1

Knee Function (Anterior Knee Pain Scale)

The Anterior Knee Pain Scale assesses symptoms and functional limitations associated with anterior knee pain. The total score ranges from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better function and fewer symptoms

Time frame
aseline and weeks 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72
2

Health-Related Quality of Life (EQ-5D)

Health-related quality of life will be assessed using the EuroQol 5-Dimension 5-Level (EQ-5D-5L) questionnaire. Responses will be converted into a utility index using the Belgian value set. Scores range from -0.532 to 1, with higher scores indicating better health-related quality of life.

Time frame
Baseline and weeks 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72
3

Fear of Movement (Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia)

The 11-item Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia assesses fear of movement or reinjury. The total score ranges from 11 to 44, with higher scores indicating greater kinesiophobia and therefore a worse outcome

Time frame
Baseline and weeks 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72
4

Pain Catastrophizing (Pain Catastrophizing Scale)

The Pain Catastrophizing Scale is a 13-item questionnaire assessing catastrophic thoughts related to pain. The total score ranges from 0 to 52, with higher scores indicating greater pain catastrophizing and therefore a worse outcome

Time frame
Baseline and weeks 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72
