About this trial
This prospective observational study aims to evaluate peripheral nerve ultrasound findings, particularly nerve cross-sectional area, in children with Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Eligibility criteria
This trial does not accept healthy volunteersQualifiers
- Age 1 to 17 years
Diagnosis compatible with Guillain-Barré syndrome according to Brighton criteria
Written informed consent from parent or legal guardian
Disqualifiers
Previous diagnosis of hereditary peripheral neuropathy
Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy or another chronic neuropathy
Previous neuromuscular disease affecting nerve conduction or ultrasound measurements
Significant peripheral nerve trauma or previous nerve surgery
Trial population
Children aged 1 to 17 years diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome admitted to or evaluated at Assiut University Children's Hospital.

Trial outcomes
Primary outcomes
Mean nerve cross-sectional area
Mean cross-sectional area of selected peripheral nerves measured by high-resolution ultrasound in mm².
Secondary outcomes
Change in nerve cross-sectional area
Mean change in peripheral nerve cross-sectional area in mm² from baseline to 3 months.
Mean distal motor latency
Mean distal motor latency measured by nerve conduction study in milliseconds.
Mean compound muscle action potential amplitude
Mean compound muscle action potential amplitude measured by nerve conduction study in millivolts.
GBS Disability Scale Score
Mean Guillain-Barré Syndrome disability scale score (range 0 to 6, higher scores indicate worse disability).
