About this trial

This study will examine how symptoms and physical abilities change during lung cancer treatment given before planned surgery, and how these changes relate to recovery after surgery. Treatment given before surgery is called neoadjuvant therapy.

The main questions are:

* How do symptoms and the ability to perform everyday activities change during treatment and before surgery? * Are symptoms and reduced physical function before surgery associated with lung complications or slower recovery afterward? * Can patient-reported information add useful information to routine preoperative assessment?

Participants will complete questionnaires before starting neoadjuvant therapy, during treatment, before surgery, and during recovery after surgery. The questionnaires will assess symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness, and pain, along with physical abilities and well-being.

Researchers will also collect information from medical records about cancer treatment, lung function, anesthesia, surgery, pain management, and postoperative complications. Changes to the planned treatment pathway, including delays or cancellation of surgery, will be recorded.

This is an observational study. Cancer treatment, surgery, and anesthesia will be determined by the treating clinical teams, not assigned by the research team. The findings may help identify patients who need additional assessment and support before and after lung surgery.

Eligibility criteria

This trial does not accept healthy volunteers

Qualifiers

Age 18 years or older.

Disqualifiers

The current neoadjuvant treatment course has already started before enrollment and baseline assessment.

Trial population

Adults aged 18 years or older with confirmed lung cancer who are scheduled to receive neoadjuvant systemic therapy followed by lung resection at Aerospace Center Hospital, Beijing, China, will be consecutively recruited before treatment begins. Treatment regimens will be selected by the treating clinical teams and recorded for analysis. Participants will undergo repeated questionnaire assessments during treatment, before surgery, and during postoperative recovery. Participants whose surgery is delayed or cancelled will remain in the cohort, with treatment changes and reasons for not proceeding to surgery documented. Postoperative outcomes will be evaluated only among participants who undergo lung resection.

Treatments tested in this trial

  • Longitudinal Assessment of Symptoms, Physical Function, and Postoperative Recovery

    Other intervention

Participants will complete standardized patient-reported questionnaires before starting neoadjuvant therapy, during treatment, at preoperative assessment, and during postoperative recovery. Assessments will track symptom burden, physical function, and recovery over time. Each questionnaire will be administered using its specified recall period. Clinical records will provide information on treatment regimens, documented adverse events, lung function, surgery, anesthesia, analgesia, and postoperative complications. Treatment delays, changes, and reasons for not proceeding to surgery will also be recorded. These assessments are conducted for observational research only. Neoadjuvant treatment and perioperative care are determined by the treating clinical teams and are not assigned by the study.
