Evaluation and Implementation of Digital Health Ecosystem in Academic Health Center

Mobile health technologies, such as smartwatches, wearable sensors, and digital applications, have the potential to support healthier lifestyles and improve the management of health conditions. These technologies can collect information on physical activity, sleep, heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, and other health indicators. However, integrating data from these devices into routine health care and electronic health records remains challenging, particularly in primary care settings and remote communities. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the implementation and feasibility of an integrated digital health ecosystem that combines wearable monitoring using smartwatches with a secure digital platform. The ecosystem is designed to collect, transmit, and display health information in a way that may support patients, health care providers, and researchers. Participants will use wearable technologies and complete questionnaires while health-related information is collected through the digital platform. The study will assess the usability, acceptability, interoperability, and feasibility of implementing this technology in real-world settings, including primary care clinics and remote communities. The study will also explore the potential use of wearable-derived physiological data to support the assessment, monitoring, and management of physiological and psychological stress. The knowledge gained from this study may help improve the integration of digital health technologies into routine care, support self-management and preventive health strategies, and facilitate access to health monitoring in underserved environments. Findings may also contribute to the development of digital health solutions for isolated and extreme environments, including future space exploration missions. This research aligns with priorities identified by the Canadian Space Agency to advance technologies that support safe, healthy, and productive human activities in remote and extreme environments on Earth and during future space missions beyond low Earth orbit.

Project GAME ON! A Digital Comic Tool to Promote Healthy Behaviors

This clinical trial aims to evaluate an interactive, culturally relevant digital health promotion comic designed to support healthy dietary and physical activity behaviors among Black/African American and Latino children ages 8 to 12 years. The comic allows children's choices to affect the storyline and health content, with the goal of increasing engagement, empowering children, and improving attitudes, beliefs, and self-efficacy related to healthy behaviors. Caregivers will also receive newsletters reinforcing healthy dietary and physical activity behaviors at home. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. Does an interactive, customizable "choose-your-own-adventure" style comic lead to greater engagement and acceptability compared to standard digital comic formats? 2. Is greater engagement with the comic associated with improved self-efficacy related to dietary and physical activity behaviors? Researchers will compare three study groups to evaluate differences in engagement, acceptability, and self-efficacy outcomes related to dietary and physical activity behaviors. Participants will: * Use a 6-week digital comic and health promotion website remotely * Complete surveys about engagement, attitudes, beliefs, and self-efficacy related to healthy behaviors * Receive periodic reminders and support messages during the intervention period * For caregivers in the enhanced and non-enhanced comic groups: receive newsletters promoting healthy dietary and physical activity behaviors at home

Reward Sensitivity Digital Intervention for Suicide Risk

The goal of this clinical trial is to develop and test an app designed to reduce suicide risk and improve emotional well-being in adolescents. The study will test if the app's daily check ins and recommended mood boosting skills will improve the adolescent's overall mood and suicidality. The main question it aims to answer is: • Is the app practical and acceptable to use daily? In the study, adolescents will: * Participate in a focus group with other adolescents and provide feedback on the app itself (design, ease of use, etc.). * Complete surveys and assessments on their mood, thoughts, and experiences. * Complete assessments about their app experience. In the study, the legal guardian of the adolescent will: * Participate in a focus group with other adolescents and provide feedback on the app itself (design, ease of use, etc.). * Complete assessments about their app experience.

Digital Mental Health for Asian Americans

Aim 1: Assess clinicians' receptiveness and potential use of Anise's online platform digital tools for managing sociocultural stressors and revise the tools for implementation. We will recruit 8 new clinicians (intervention group) who will receive training and provide feedback on the digital tools. Aim 2: Evaluate the initial efficacy of the online platform digital tools for managing the impact of sociocultural stressors with 64 Asian American clients. The intervention group clinicians (receiving training and using the digital tools) and newly recruited 8 clinicians (not receiving training and not using the digital tools) for the control group will work with 4 clients each. The clinical outcome data of the clients will be analyzed to examine differences in the client prognosis between the control and intervention group. A successful outcome of this project will be digital materials that effectively address the impact of sociocultural stressors for Asian Americans on Anise Health's digital health platform.

Digitally Assisted Rehabilitation at Home for Older Adults After Hip Surgery (GRIMSEL)

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if a 12-week digitally supported, multimodal home rehabilitation program using the medical application Akina is as effective compared to routine care regarding functional independence in older adults undergoing hip surgery. How is this multimodal home rehabilitation program received by patients? Is this multimodal home program at least as effective in terms of functional indpendence, muscle status, mobility and quality of life compared to routine care? Researchers will compare the multimodal rehabilitation program using the application Akina to routine care to see if the program works to treat patients after hip surgery. Participants will: Undergo the rehab program at home or receive routine care (outpatient physiotherapy) for 12 weeks Visit the clinic after 6 and 12 weeks

Burden-Evaluated Active Therapy for AF Using Continuous Wearables BEAT-AF Trial

Traditional AF classification (e.g., paroxysmal, persistent, permanent) relies largely on patient-reported symptoms and intermittent electrocardiographic monitoring, which cannot continuously or objectively reflect disease progression, nor effectively inform optimal intervention timing. Although "AF burden" (i.e., duration of AF episodes) has emerged as a potential marker, its association with clinical outcomes remains inconsistent due to limitations in monitoring methods and its one-dimensional nature. Based on our previous work, investigators developed a five-dimensional AF progression model using photoplethysmography (PPG) signals collected from wearable devices. This model quantifies AF progression across five domains: episode frequency, duration, temporal aggregation, circadian rhythm, and tachycardia burden, enabling continuous and multidimensional assessment. Prior validation has demonstrated high agreement with 24-hour Holter monitoring and effective identification of high-risk patients. The BEAT-AF trial is designed to evaluate the clinical utility of this model in a real-world setting. Specifically, investigators will investigate whether early intervention (e.g., optimization of medical therapy or consideration of catheter ablation) in patients with elevated five-dimensional AF burden (≥4.59%) can reduce symptoms, rhythm/rate-related abnormalities, and AF-related adverse events (such as stroke and heart failure). This study is expected to provide new evidence for dynamic monitoring of AF progression, optimal timing of intervention, and personalized management strategies, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Empowering Knowledge, Self-Testing & Resilience Through Innovative Methods for HIV

The goal of this study is to learn whether a digital tool can help improve HIV knowledge, self-awareness, and testing among adolescents in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The tool includes online HIV education, a self-assessment for HIV risk, and access to trained peer educators for support. The study will also explore how comfortable and willing adolescents are to use this kind of digital health service. The main questions the study aims to answer are: * Can this digital tool help adolescents better understand HIV and their personal risk? * Will more adolescents be willing to get tested for HIV after using the tool? * What factors affect whether adolescents accept and use digital HIV services? Researchers will compare two groups of high school students: * One group will use the digital tool for 6 weeks * The other group will receive standard HIV education (not through the tool) Participants will: * Answer surveys before and after the 6-week period * Learn about HIV through videos and interactive content * Use the tool to assess their personal HIV risk * Receive support from trained peer educators (online) The researchers hope this study will lead to new ways of using technology to improve HIV prevention and testing for young people.
