Effects of Whey Protein and Resistance Training on Muscle Mass in Patients With Intestinal Failure

This single-center, prospective, four-arm randomized controlled trial will enroll 72 adults with chronic intestinal failure and low muscle mass. All participants will receive standardized basic nutritional support and will be randomly assigned to one of four groups: usual care, whey protein supplementation, resistance training, or whey protein supplementation combined with resistance training. Participants assigned to whey protein supplementation will receive 20 g of whey protein daily for 6 weeks. Participants assigned to resistance training will complete moderate-intensity resistance exercises for approximately 30 minutes, 3 to 5 times per week, for 6 weeks. Participants in the combined group will receive both interventions. Body composition, appendicular skeletal muscle mass index, phase angle, handgrip strength, 6-meter walking speed, laboratory indicators, and quality of life will be assessed at baseline, week 6, and week 8. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of whey protein supplementation and resistance training, alone or in combination, for improving muscle mass and physical function in patients with chronic intestinal failure.

Muscle Aging Phenotypes in Childhood Cancer Survivors

Childhood cancer survivors experience premature declines in muscle mass, strength, and physical function that contribute to morbidity and early mortality. The biological mechanisms driving these impairments are heterogeneous and poorly understood. This observational study aims to characterize distinct muscle health endotypes in adult survivors of childhood cancer using advanced imaging, neuromuscular testing, and functional assessment. Survivors with reduced muscle health and community controls will undergo multimodal magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, nerve conduction studies, surface electromyography, body composition assessment, and physical performance testing during a single study visit integrated into an ongoing cohort evaluation. Identifying mechanistic endotypes of impaired muscle health will support development of targeted interventions to preserve function and improve long-term outcomes in childhood cancer survivors. Primary Objective: \- Characterize reduced muscle health endotypes in childhood cancer survivors. Secondary Objective: \- Identify specific treatment and lifestyle related risk factors for each reduced muscle health endotype. Exploratory Objective: \- Host germline genetics will be associated with specific muscle endotypes.

Exercise and/or HMB in Older Diabetes With Low Muscle Mass

The investigators aimed to examine if β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) supplementation enhances the effects of exercise on muscle mass, physical performance and insulin resistance and observe potential residual effects in older diabetes with low muscle mass, and to find the optimal treatment plan.
