About this trial

This interventional study aims to assess self-sufficiency in patients with Parkinson's disease in the spa setting using the new Czech Functional Efficiency of Self-sufficiency Test (FEST) and to validate the test in this population. It also aims to evaluate changes in cognition, stability, fear of falling, and gait after specialized spa care and to analyze correlations between self-sufficiency and these outcomes.

Eligibility criteria

This trial does not accept healthy volunteers

Qualifiers

Idiopathic PD,

severity level 1 - 3 according to the Hoehn and Yahr scale,

age 50-80 years,

the ability to walk independently,

Disqualifiers

moderate to severe dementia,

other comorbidities affecting the gait (e.g. post-stroke condition, vertigo,...), psychiatric disorders,

severe sensory impairments that would limit the implementation of the rehabilitation plan.

Trial design

Design model

Single group

Treatments tested in this trial

  • EXERCISE TRAINING WITH OR WITHOUT MEDICATION

    Other intervention

Patients undergo therapies led by clinical experts in the field of physical therapy. Individual therapies include soft tissue therapies, exercises aimed at increasing/maintaining range of motion, increasing muscle strength, balance, cognition, and self-sufficiency. The comprehensive rehabilitation stay will also include the use of natural healing resources - iodine-bromine brine, combined with active therapy.

Trial outcomes

Primary outcomes

1

Change in Self-Sufficiency Test Score

Change in the total score of the Functional Efficiency of Self-Sufficiency Test from baseline to completion of the rehabilitation program. The total score ranges from 0 to 100 points, with higher scores indicating greater functional independence. Unit of measure: points Measurement tool: Functional Efficiency of Self-Sufficiency Test

Time frame
3 weeks
2

Change in Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III) Score

Change in the total Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III) score from baseline to completion of the rehabilitation program. The ACE-III total score ranges from 0 to 100 points, with higher scores indicating better cognitive performance. Unit of measure: points Measurement tool: Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III)

Time frame
3 weeks
3

Change in Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International (Short FES-I) Score

Change in the total Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International (Short FES-I) score from baseline to completion of the rehabilitation program. The total score ranges from 7 to 28 points, with higher scores indicating greater concern about falling. Unit of measure: points Measurement tool: Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International (Short FES-I)

Time frame
3 weeks
4

Change in Mini-BESTest Score

Change in the total Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Mini-BESTest) score from baseline to completion of the rehabilitation program. The total score ranges from 0 to 28 points, with higher scores indicating better dynamic balance. Unit of measure: points Measurement tool: Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Mini-BESTest)

Time frame
3 weeks
