ABCG8, UGT1A1 and Gallstone Disease After Bariatric Surgery

The goal of this observational genetic case-control study is to learn whether two specific genetic variants in ABCG8 and UGT1A1 are associated with gallstone disease after bariatric surgery. The study includes adults who have previously undergone bariatric surgery. The main questions it aims to answer are whether the ABCG8 D19H variant and the UGT1A1 rs6742078 variant are associated with an increased risk of gallstone disease requiring cholecystectomy after bariatric surgery. Researchers will compare patients who underwent bariatric surgery and later had their gallbladder removed because of gallstone disease with patients who underwent bariatric surgery but did not develop gallstone disease or undergo cholecystectomy during follow-up. Participants will provide one blood sample for targeted genetic analysis and complete questionnaires about health, previous surgery, medication use, family history, and gastrointestinal quality of life. Relevant clinical information will also be collected from medical records.

Sleep Evaluation Before and After Metabolic Surgery

Obesity is frequently associated with sleep disturbances, including poor sleep quality, insomnia symptoms, daytime sleepiness, and obstructive sleep apnea. Metabolic surgery is an effective treatment for obesity and may improve several sleep-related outcomes, but the long-term change in sleep quality after surgery is not well understood. Most previous studies have relied on questionnaires or single-night measurements, which may not fully reflect sleep patterns in daily life. The SLEEP-BAM study is an observational longitudinal cohort study in adults scheduled for primary metabolic surgery at Catharina Hospital Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Participants will complete two home-based sleep measurement periods: one before surgery and one approximately 1 year after surgery. During each period, participants will wear two wearable devices for 5 consecutive nights: a Garmin Index Sleep Monitor and a viQtor research device. Participants will also complete sleep questionnaires and a daily sleep diary. The main aim is to evaluate the change in objective sleep quality from before surgery to 1 year after surgery, measured using the Garmin Sleep Score. Secondary aims include evaluating changes in sleep duration, sleep efficiency, sleep timing, sleep regularity, oxygen saturation, heart rate variability, subjective sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, anxiety and depression symptoms, and quality of life. The study will also explore whether changes in sleep quality are associated with postoperative weight loss. The study does not change the standard surgical treatment. Participants undergo metabolic surgery as part of routine care, and the research procedures consist only of sleep monitoring, questionnaires, and sleep diaries.

Conventional Vs Tailored Limb Lengths in Laparoscopic Roux-en Y Gastric Bypass Surgery

The study aims to investigate whether tailoring limb lengths based on the 1/3rd and 2/3rd concept improves clinical outcomes in Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (LRYGB) surgery compared to conventional limb lengths. In this study, two groups were described, first group involves patients who will undergo Lap RYGB with conventional limb lengths of 75cms and 125cms, while the second group is given tailored limb lengths according to the total small bowel length. In the follow up period, Total percentage weight loss, improvement in BMI along with the remission of co-morbidities were also assessed.

Beijing Friendship Hospital Metabolic Surgery Database

Metabolic surgery, as a recognition treatment option for patients with clinical morbid obesity, is gaining increasing appreciation. In addition to substantial weight loss, emerging studies have highlighted that metabolic surgery can substantially ameliorate obesity-related metabolic diseases, including but not limited to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension, dyslipidemia, obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)in severely obese patients. However, further investigations with larger sample size and longer observation time still needed to clarity the efficacy and safety of metabolic surgery in Chinese patients with obesity and encouraging future research in this field.
